Ruins III : Performing Queer History - Artist Talk

Ruins III: Performing Queer History
Curated by Nathan Storey

Artsit talk, Nathan Storey in person
Saturday, Aug 8, 2026
7:00pm

Nathan Storey will present his research on queer archives and RUINS, an iterative exhibition project unfolding across the United States. Each new iteration brings together a different group of queer artists whose work considers how histories are preserved, performed, fragmented, and reimagined.

Storey’s research chronicles the period beginning with the expansion of queer liberation movements following the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, through the AIDS crisis and the reactionary backlash against queer visibility leading up to 1995—the year of his birth and the deadliest year of the epidemic in the United States. He returns to printed matter from this era as evidence of a historical hinge at which the horizon of liberation collided with utter catastrophe.

The presentation will be followed by a conversation between Nathan Storey and MaryV on queer archives, intimacy, and contemporary art practice.

MaryV is a queer photographer and interdisciplinary artist based in Denver, Colorado, working across photography, assemblage, and performance. Her practice documents queer life through intimate portraits of relationships, chosen family, domestic space, and community. Approaching photography as both a collaborative encounter and a form of preservation, MaryV creates tender visual archives centered on trust, connection, queer joy, and the complexities of living within—and caring for—one another.

Exhibit runs: Aug 6 – Oct 21, 2026

Ruins III is an iterative exhibition of interdisciplinary artists reckoning with queer histories, pasts, archives, legacies, and loss within their own contemporary studio practices. The artists in Ruins III unearth LGBTQ+ histories, search for their fragmentary pieces, and reimagine our queer constellations. This iteration of Ruins is a regional survey of artists based in or with strong ties to Colorado.

Exhibiting artists include: Ethan Cherry, Steven Frost, Apple Hultz, Robert Martin, Cody Norton, Joel Swanson, MaryV

This exhibit is sponsored in part by The Puffin Foundation, LTD
